Dear Families,
The Student Led Conferences (SLC’s) are scheduled for Thursday, March 12. They take place between 1:00-3:00pm, and 5:00-7:30pm. Your child’s Advisor has sent out a schedule. I hope you have a time assigned to you.
While our 7th and 8th grade families are familiar with the 75 Morton SLC format, our 6th grade and those families that are new to our community in the 7th and 8th grade will have a new experience.
It is customary in a new school (or any new community) that rituals, traditions, and systems are introduced and tweaked over the first years. This is our third year developing our best version of Student Led Conferences, and we will continue to reflect and improve every year.
We value the SLC for the opportunities it offers for our students. Here is an excellent definition from Educational Leadership:
"A student-led conference is a meeting with a student and his or her family and teachers during which the student shares his or her portfolio of work and discusses progress with family members. The student facilitates the meeting from start to finish. Student-led conferences can be implemented at all grade levels, K–12. Preparation for a conference creates an authentic purpose for good organizational and communication skills. The structure builds students’ sense of responsibility and accountability for their own learning, and it helps to hone their understanding of what it means to meet learning targets."
Our goal is to give a voice to your children, and to build the capacity of our entire student body to be strong participants in their own education. We know you share this goal with us, and we are confident that you will find these meetings informative. It is essential to remember that the SLC is a 20 minute meeting that celebrates the efforts of your children. Congratulations ahead of time as you participate in their exciting journey.
With Respect,
Jacqui
