SUBJECT: High School Letter #1

High School Letter #1

May 31, 2023

Dear 7th Grade Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined the Coffee Talk yesterday with myself and Elaine. For those who did not join, we wanted to send a recap of some of what we discussed regarding the High School Process.

While we are waiting on final timeline and process information from the DOE Office of Enrollment, there are a few things that you can do now.

  • If you haven’t already, you can log in to your New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) at schoolsaccount.nyc to make sure your information is up to date.  If you need to update any information or you are unable to access your NYCSA account, please email Hope for assistance.

  • You can also log in to your MySchools account at  myschools.nyc.  This is the account you will use for high school admissions.  Many of you may still have your account from when you did the middle school admissions process.  While it is too early to start making your list of schools in My Schools, you will be able to search through the high school directory on the site.  This will give you some ideas of schools that you may want to visit.

  • High schools will begin to publish their tour schedules at the end of August/beginning of September.  You will need to keep track of those sites and make those appointments according to your schedule.  You can also sign up here for the DOE Admissions Email List to receive notifications of upcoming tours and open houses.

  • There are different categories of NYC public high schools: Specialized High Schools, Screened Admissions High Schools, Ed-Opt High Schools and Open Admissions High Schools.

    • The specialized high schools' admissions are based solely on the results of the Specialized High School Aptitude Test (SHSAT).  The one exception is LaGuardia High School, that is based on an audition. These schools have a different admissions list than the other types of schools.

    • Screened Admissions High Schools base admissions on grades and often have an audition, test or other application activity.

    • Ed-Opt High Schools base admissions on grades.

    • Open Admissions High Schools base admissions on a lottery process.

  • We recommend that students look at all types of schools and include a balanced cross section of schools on their admissions list. You will be able to list up to 12 schools on the general admissions list.  It is our recommendation that you do list as many schools as possible up to 12.  This will give you the highest chance of getting a school that your student wishes to attend.

We will be sending more information throughout the fall as it becomes available.  Please look out for more "High School Letters"

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us.

Best,
